Discrimination in police department has become an issue hence proactive policing . Community policing mandates that the police work with the community, rather than against it. But often, the operations and the actual employees do not reflect the communities being served.

How discrimination has affected police departments historically

Proactive policing is a strategic approach by police agencies to prevent crime. This is a relatively new phenomenon in the United States. It came about from a crisis in confidence in policing that began to emerge in the 1960s. This was because of social unrest, high crime rates, and growing skepticism regarding the effectiveness of standard approaches to policing. Consequently, beginning in the 1980s and 1990s, innovative police practices and policies that took a more proactive approach began to develop. That is, policing strategies that  they have as one of their goals to prevent or reduce crime and disorder. The focus primarily on uncovering ongoing crime or responding to crimes once they have occurred. However, many social group has been most harmed by employment discrimination in law enforcement.

Advantages and disadvantages of affirmative action

Affirmative action is a controversial method of ending job discrimination. The following are benefits and disadvantages of affirmative action.

Advantages

• Climbing the socioeconomic ladder
• Promoting education and work on a communal level
• Boosting the education of the less fortunate families

Disadvantages

• Reverse discrimination
• Lack of meritocracy
• Demeaning true achievement

Strong relationships between police agencies and the communities  serve a critical role in maintaining public safety and effective policing. Police  rely on community members cooperation  to provide information about crime in their neighborhoods. Community also need to work with the police to come up with solutions to crime and disorder problems. However, community members’ willingness to trust the police depends on whether they believe in police actions to reflect community values. Police also need to incorporate the principles of procedural justice and legitimacy.
