Other websites may offer seemingly convincing archaeological information but are biased toward particular views and values for the past. For instance, some Creationist websites will present radiocarbon dating as flawed due to the effect of volcanic explosions. As presented and without referencing other sources of information, this may sound credible. However, archaeologists have studied this possibility and know that it is false – they know how other processes in the past do affect radiocarbon and have calibrated for it. This project is due in Unit 13. Students will pick a topic of their choice related to the course material presented up through that unit (Units 1-13).

Students are especially encouraged to pick a topic the class has covered that may prove to be contentious. For example, the evolution of Homo sapiens covered in Units 4-6 would be a good project as creationist websites will offer alternative or contradictory information to that presented in the course. Covered in Units 9-13, the origins of complex civilization and early monuments generate many “fringe,” popular theories, such as websites espousing alien intervention in building the Egyptian pyramids. There are many other possible research topics that are sure to generate interesting results, and students are encouraged to be creative in picking a topic.

Please look at the examples of previous projects under the module in Unit 13. The goals of the Internet Research Project are to pick an archaeological topic that interests you, preferably one that is controversial or debated, and then: (1) see what you can find out on the web; (2) wonder about how reliable and credible the sources you are finding are; and (3) critically assess the sources and their arguments and reach a conclusion concerning the most plausible explanation(s) for your topic. Students are required to write a short, 750 word/3-pages, double-spaced summary of these goals. https://youtu.be/PHouTCFsZqg
