You are to choose a minimum of three poems from the Romantic Period (Unit 2) and find a centralized theme and write a literary analysis, arguing for your findings. It must adhere to correct MLA essay format as well as correct documentation, in-text and Works Cited page required. The work you completed in Comp I and II was great preparation for this essay. You are to argue, by providing substantial evidence from the text(s), for a specific point.

Remember, you are trying to convince the reader to agree with you about some aspect of the work you are analyzing. This is essentially an argumentative essay, except you are getting your evidence from the literary text(s). I do not provide topics on this paper because I want students to use the skills learned in Comp I and II to research the database and internet for topics. A key skill in independent research is to dig in and “review the literature.” That is what you will do here. Go out, dig around, find out what others have been saying about the story; use that to help you formulate your argument about the paper.

However, here is a hint…look at the study points in Unit 2. Those points are major topics for the poems. It should be easy to find research on it. Remember, you cannot simply “discuss” as mentioned above. You must argue for a specific, original idea you discover from reading the text(s) and researching the topics. You are to use a minimum of three outside sources. These sources must be scholarly, so focus on either books, library database, or Google scholar. Stay away from random websites.
