Cultural diversity is a subject that has received immense attention, particularly in the 21st century. Improved information and technology infrastructure, coupled with the globalization of economies, has increased opportunities for cultural diversity that requires individuals in workplaces and even institutions of learning to be more accommodative of one another (Inegbedion et al., 2020). Cultural adversity has a number of advantages that are yet to be harnessed, especially related to learning one another to have diverse ideas about other communities. That is, their behaviors, norms, and even the way of communication (Cañas, 2013). . Culture influences the way a person communicates, his/her behavior, norms, and personal beliefs.

Means of Communication : cultural diversity

The culture in which individuals socialize has a significant impact on their communication. Culture provides implicit knowledge to members about how to interpret other people’s behavior and how to behave in different situations (Bond & Smith, 2018). Given that I am a German, I come from a low context culture. In such a culture, most of the information is exchanged in an explicit manner (Hornikx & le Pair, 2017). In rare cases, you can find anything is implicit. Thus, I speak in an explicit manner where I provide extensive information about the subject matter. To avoid any misunderstandings, I find myself giving verbal explanations, unlike peers from other cultures I interacted with. My culture has also influenced me in relying heavily on written communication. Also, I prefer relying on evidence and facts to make decisions rather than intuition and feelings.

Influence on Beliefs and Behaviors: cultural diversity

The impact that my culture has on my behavior can be evaluate based on Hofstede Cultural Dimensions. In the German culture, the power distance index is low indicating that the degree of equality that exists and is accepted between those with and without power is low (Beugelsdijk & Welzel, 2018). Such a culture has made me challenge the status of a leader, and I tend to involve others in decision-making. The individualism versus collectivism dimension of Germany implies that Germany is an individualistic society. As a result, my communication suggests that I enjoy challenges and expect individual rewards for my headwork. Such a culture has also taught me to be honest even when it hurts; thus, my communication is very direct.

Exploration of the German culture has also revealed to me that it is among the uncertainty avoidant countries. It is the reason why I have a preference for deductive approaches in my planning, thinking, and even presentation in school. Whenever I communicate, I ensure there are details to create certainty that a particular project or topic has been well-thought-out. On the long term orientation dimension, the German culture is pragmatic (Beugelsdijk & Welzel, 2018). As a result, I grew up believing that the truth depended on the context, situation, and time. I also persevere and flexible to adapt to any changing conditions. The indulgence dimension also reveal that I culture restrains me. Therefore, I do not put much focus on the gratification of my desires and even leisure (Beugelsdijk & Welzel, 2018). In most cases, I always feel that indulging myself is somewhat not appropriate.
