Talk therapy and medication are traditional commonly used to help people manage and/or cure mental health disorders. Alternative therapies such as relaxation technique are becoming more popular as people look for other methods to help improve mental health.

Relaxation therapy

A relaxation technique is any process, procedure, or activity that helps a person  to attain a state of great calmness .It as well reduces level of pain, anxiety, stress or anger. It also eliminates  tension throughout the body and promotes a peaceful state of mind. The following are the different techniques:

  • progressive relaxation;
  • cue-controlled relaxation;
  • breathing exercises and techniques;
  • guided imagery and visualization techniques;
  • biofeedback, water , and color therapy, etc.

Importantly, many of these techniques employ the use of repetition, for example, through words, sounds, phrases, prayer, body sensations and coordinated muscle movements .

Research on relaxation therapy

Find research that have information of any of the above alternative technique in this case relaxation.  In addition, discuss the technique and how the research supports or disproves  its effectiveness . Further, address at least four of the topics discussed this semester, for example, biology, learning, memory, motivation, stress, etc.

 Description of the relaxation technique

What part of the body/mind is affected by the technique (topics covered this semester) . Articulate how the technique is implemented and the required training for the practitioner. Further provide a summary of the research. Consequently, explain  how people may or may not benefit from the therapy. Do predictions for future use of the technique. Also information about a local or national organization that supports the technique. For example:

  • The American Art Therapy Association;
  • Therapy Animals of San Antonio.
  • International Association for Neurofeedback & Research.
