Close reading of Long Day Journey

1. A thesis-driven close reading of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. 2. Write an alternate ending for the play and include a brief (two page) critical explanation of the choices that you made. This must be written in the form of a play and emulate O’Nei. M‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍ost students choose the first option. If you opt to write another close reading essay, you will want to revisit the previous assignment to look over the writing suggestions and examples of strong thesis statements. The second option is, by far, the most difficult, but it can be a fun challenge if you are a creative writer.

Not only must you write a satisfactory alternate ending to the play (in the form of a play and in O’Neill’s style, no less), you will also have to write a short critical  analysis of your own work in which you explain how and why you made the choices you did in your dramatic scene. The third and fourth options are particularly interesting if you enjoy comparing a staged or filmed performance of the play with the text. Option thre‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍e asks you to examine a full staged of filmed production of the play.  https://youtu.be/g6DbecZ4Png

Once you have watched it, you will take the role either of Eugene O’Neill or the director and write a letter to either the director or O’Neill.  For instance, if you write as O’Neill, you may want to explain to the director why you disapprove of his or her interpretation of the play. Alternately, you can take the role of the director and justify the changes you’ve made to the playwright.

In option four, you will select a single scene and examine how a director has staged it, analyzing the choices he or she made, and evaluating their efficacy. In all four options, you will be required to draw upon at least two secondary sources to support your research—even if you take the more ‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍creative route.
